235	Had been assemblyman Death of the Hon Melville W. van Amber occurred in New Bremen Lowville, Feb 8. Melville W Van Amber, aged 76 died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Charles Meeker, at New Bremen at 7 o'clock last evening. He had been in poor health for the past two years. Mr van Amber was a Republican in politics and had represented the town of New Bremen on the Lewis County Board of Supervisors and served as member of Assembly from Lewis County for two years. He was a resident of Lowville for a time and the president of the village for two years and a member of the Lowville Club and the Lowville Lodge No. 34 F. and A.M. Before entering politics he was engaged in lumbering in the town of New Bremen. Surviving are two daughters and two sons. "BURIAL OF JONATHAN HOFFMAN THURSDAY. DECEASED PROMINENT IN CIVIC AND INDUSTRIAL AFFAIRS HERE FOR YEARS. Jonathan Hoffman, for many years a resident of Elwood died at Detroit, Michigan, at 5:30 a.m. Monday. The remains were brought to Elwood arriving over the Pennsylvania lines at 8:35 a.m. today. They were accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Stancil of Detroit and Dr. G. V. Newcomer, of Elwood. Mr. Hoffman was nearly 85 years old. He was born at Clyde, New York, October 29, 1831. He was twice married, his first wife being May Sophia VanAmber, of Alexandria Bay, New York. To this union were born five children, all of whom are still living except one son. Those surviving are William Hl and Charles J. Hoffman, of Augusta, Kansas, Mrs. G. V. Newcomer, of Elwood and Mrs. William E. Stancil, of Detroit. The third son, Oliver, died in Elwood January 7, 1907. As a young man Mr. Hoffman learned the window glass trade which he followed during the active years of his life, and was considered one of the best window glass blowers in America. In 1892 he came to Elwood and in partnership with John F. Rodefer, built the Elwood Window Glass factory, which he operated until 1899, when he sold out and retired from active business. In January, 1894, he was married to Mrs. Mary Finch, of Elwood , who died in April of 1914. In the fall of 1915 he went to Detroit to live with his youngest daughter and her husband where he resided until his death. Mr. Hoffman was an active member of the Methodist church for the greater part of his life. During the early day of the Civil War he volunteered and was appointed sergeant in a New York Company and was stationed at Washington D. C. and at the time of the battle of Bull Run acting with his company as guard at the capitol. He remained in the army until discharged for physical disability. The funeral will be held at the Methodist church at 10 a.m. Thursday, conducted by Rev. J. F. Radcliff. Internment will follow in the Elwood cemetery. The Elwood Call Leader carried an obituary dated THURSDAY, AUGUST 3, 1916. The funeral of the late Jonathan Hoffman who died Monday morning at Detroit was held this morning at the Methodist church, Rev. J. F. Radcliff in charged. The deceased was a resident of Elwood for years, having a great circle of friends in the community and many attended the service this morning to pay their last respects to the man whose long life has come to an end. 239	Mrs William J van Amburgh Mrs William J (Minnie) van Amburgh, 68, 18 Richardson Street, Walden, who lived most of her life here, died Monday at St. Luke's Hospital, Newburgh after a long illness. Born in the town of Rochester, New York, October 15, 1899, she was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Purcell Bunting, and had been married to the late William J van Amburgh. Mrs van Amburgh had been a member of the Walden Methodist Church, Auxiliary of William Deskin Post 158 American Legion, American Legion and Eclipse Rebekah Lodge. Survivors include two sons, William M and Howard E, both of Walden; four grandchildren; a mother, Elizabeth Purcell Bunting of Walden; three brothers, Wilson Bunting, Walden; Lloyd Bunting, New Windsor and Howard Bunting of Middletown; two sisters, Mrs Donald Caruso, New Brunswick, New Jersey and Mrs Lillian Cansas, Highland, New York, and nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be this afternoon at 2 at Millspaugh Funeral Home, 22 Bank Street, Walden with the Reverend Paul N Otto officiating. Interment will be in the Walkill Valley Cemetery. 240	SHIRLEY M. VAN AMBURGH Walden, N.Y.Shirley M. Van Amburgh, a homemaker and lifetime resident of the area, died Monday, December 2, 2002 in Newburgh. She was 80.The daughter of the late John and Agnes Walker Morris, she was born August 10, 1922 in Walden. She was a member of the Walden United Methodist Church for over 50 years, and a member of the Walden Women's Club. Survivors include her husband, Howard "Bud" Van Amburgh at home; two sons, Paul and his wife, Mary Van Amburgh, of Glens Falls, and Neil Van Amburgh of Newburgh; two daughters, Jan and her husband, Michael, Weiner of Walden, and Beth Van Amburgh of Campbell Hall; and nine grandchildren, Michael Van Amburgh and his wife, Vicky, Ryan Van Amburgh and his wife, Aarika, Kevin Van Amburgh, Patrick Van Amburgh, Daniel Van Amburgh, Erich Weiner, Craig Weiner, Jennifer Weiner, and Meg Conroy. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, December 4, at the Millspaugh Funeral Home, 22 Bank Street, Walden. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, December 5, a the United Methodist Church of Walden, with the Rev. Kent Jackson officiating. Burial will be in Wallkill Valley Cemetery in Walden. 242	Van Amburgh, Roy F. Times Union, The (Albany, NY) - Wednesday, April 25, 2012 NORTH ALBANY Roy F. Van Amburgh, 88, died Monday, April 23, 2012 at Albany Medical Center. Born February 5, 1924 in Albany, he was the son of the late LeRoy and Beulah (Stuart) Van Amburgh, who died when he was a young child. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 65 years, Evelyn, in 2011. He was the stepson of the late Anna Van Amburgh, and best friend of the late William J. Van Amburgh. Roy was a United States Navy veteran, proudly serving in World War II, and, up to the time of his passing, an active member of American Legion Post #1610, where he was a founding member. He was a licensed electrician for most of his adult life, fully engaged in IBEW, Local #724, serving on the executive board and, ultimately, as business agent. Upon his retirement from the union, he worked as an electrical inspector for the City of Albany Building Department. In addition, Roy served on the Albany County Legislature proudly representing the North Albany area. Survivors include three children, Bob (Barbara) Van Amburgh of Loudonville; Karen (Charles) Kelefant of Loudonville; and Mary Hering of Cinnaminson, N.J. He was the loving "Pop Pop" to six grandchildren, Brian Van Amburgh, Amy Hammerschlag, Jennifer and Emily Kelefant, Meghan Huber, and Adrianna Hering. In addition, he was the great-grandfather to Emma and Alexis Van Amburgh and Jake Hammerschlag. He is also survived by his dear sister-in-law, Eleanor Place. The family would like to thank the paramedic response team from the Albany Fire Department, the ER and MICU staff at Albany Medical Center, and to Roy's two compassionate caregivers Nicole and Kristen for their unwavering professionalism and commitment to our father. Funeral services will be held Thursday morning 10:00 at Sacred Heart Church. He was loading his truck and somehow lost his hold on the barrel. He suffered a broken rib, crushed ankle and body bruises. He is doing as well as could be expected according to his son, Roy Van Amber, who visited him Tuesday at the hospital.
