Dear wife,

I have a few minutes to spare so I will write a few lines to you. I am well as ever; hope this will find you in as good health. I am here cooking yet. Sam Sheldon is here, only a little ways from our camp, in sight. I was over to see him Sunday and he was here. He has just gone out of my tent now. I had my likeness taken yesterday. I will send you one of them was taken with my hair down on my forehead, then I fixed it up and had it taken again. The two cost $150. You can take you choice in them and send the other to mother. I bought a package of paper and envelopes this morning; there was a pin in it which I send with this. You will probably get my other letter with the money in it and answer it before you get this. As soon as I get you answer I will send you 20 dollars more. David Gotham was here Monday to see me; he is well and fat as a bear. There I can't write any more this time. Only I will tell you it is very cold here and has been for 3 days. My love to all my friends.

I am as ever yours truly
